According to American Banking News, “credit card issuers have been sending customers letters informing them that their interest rates would be jumping dramatically. Some Citibank customers with perfect credit have even gotten letters informing them that the interest rates would be jumping to 29.99%.” In fact, a study by the Pew Charitable Trusts' Safe Credit Cards Project shows that interest rates on credit cards rose by an average of 23% from December 2008 to July 2009 though banks’ total cost of lending declined during that period. This comes as credit card companies race to beat the deadline for new regulation that will go into effect in February as result of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (or CARD) Act which was recently passed by Congress. All of us at KUMFCU are very concerned about our members, and all United Methodists in Western PA. These rate increases can cause some serious financial hardships at a time when most people are struggling just to make ends meet. KUMFCU, like most credit unions, has lower interest rates, lower fees and less punitive policies for their credit cards. We've never practiced that type of at-will policy change that you see with the large institutions and we don’t intend to start now.
